19th Century Gold Coast: Journey Through Time

Installation View

As a timeline exhibition, visitors follow the significant events that occured chronologically from 1800 till 1900 in the Gold Coast.

Other thematics topics include the Missionaries, the Abolition of Slave Trade, Bonds and Treaties and the important citizens include King Aggrey,Prempeh I and Yaa Asantewaa.

The thematic and time-lined exhibition offers a walk-through of significant moments in the highly volatile and defining periods of the 19th Century Gold Coast—wars between native groups and colonialists; treaties and counter-treaties; and a new religious perspective making inroads into our people’s consciousness.

Even more eye-opening is the revelation of a reluctant British government that, at the beginning of the century, did not see any benefit in remaining or maintaining trade ties with the Gold Coast. However, by the end of the period, Britain became the sole foreign occupier of the Gold Coast.

Prominence is also given to pivotal personalities who, through illustrious displays of bravery and unwavering loyalty, laid the founding structures for the Gold Coast’s independence in later years.

The general public, families, and students are cordially invited to witness and participate in this exhibition: “19th Century Gold Coast: Journey Through a Time…”
