"Africa By Design" is a pioneering exhibition that spotlights the creativity of 23 emerging and established designers from seven sub-Saharan African countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Mali. Curated by Chrissa Amuah, founder of AMWA Designs, with curatorial consultation from Suzanne Trocmé, the exhibition is hosted at Accra's Nubuke Foundation.
The showcase is divided into three disciplines: furniture, textile, and product design. Notably, South African designers are absent, a deliberate choice to highlight talents from countries with less exposure in the design arena. Participants include Kenyan-Ethiopian designer Jomo Tariku, known for his futuristic interpretations of traditional African furniture, and Senegal's Nulangee Design, recognized for transforming discarded wood into functional, high-end pieces.
"Africa By Design" serves as a platform to celebrate and elevate African design, emphasizing identity, tradition, and modernity. The exhibition aims to foster greater recognition and appreciation for African designers on both local and international stages.
